I Am Hashimoto’s


My name is Hashimoto’s.
I’m an invisible autoimmune disease that attacks your thyroid gland causing you to become hypothyroid.

I am now velcroed to you for life.

Others around you can’t see me or hear me, but YOUR body feels me.
I can attack you anywhere and any way I please.
I can cause severe pain or, if I’m in a good mood, I can just cause you to ache all over.

Remember when you and energy ran around together and had fun?

I took energy from you, and gave you exhaustion.

Try to have fun now.

I can take good sleep from you and in its place, give you brain fog and lack of concentration.
I can make you want to sleep 24/7, and I can also cause insomnia.
I can make you tremble internally or make you feel cold or hot when everyone else feels normal.

I can also give you swollen hands and feet, swollen face and eyelids, swollen everything.
I can make you feel very anxious or very depressed, too. I can also cause other mental health problems.
I can make your hair fall out, become dry and brittle, cause acne, cause dry skin, the sky is the limit with me.

I can make you gain weight and no matter what you eat or how much you exercise, I can keep that weight on you.
I can also make you lose weight.
I don’t discriminate.

Some of my other autoimmune disease friends often join me, giving you even more to deal with.

If you have something planned, or are looking forward to a great day, I can take that away from you.
You didn’t ask for me.

I chose you for various reasons:

That virus or viruses you had that you never really recovered from, or that car accident, or maybe it was the years of abuse and trauma (I thrive on stress.)
You may have a family history of me. Whatever the cause, I’m here to stay.

I hear you’re going to see a doctor to try and get rid of me.

That makes me laugh.

Just try.

You will have to go to many, many doctors until you find one who can help you effectively.

You will be put on the wrong medication for you, pain pills, sleeping pills, energy pills, told you are suffering from anxiety or depression, given anti-anxiety pills and antidepressants.

There are so many other ways I can make you sick and miserable, the list is endless – that high cholesterol, gall bladder issue, blood pressure issue, blood sugar issue, heart issue among others?

That’s probably me.
Can’t get pregnant, or have had a miscarriage?
That’s probably me too.

Teeth and gum problems?
I told you the list was endless.

You may be given a TENs unit, get massaged, told if you just sleep and exercise properly I will go away.
You’ll be told to think positively, you’ll be poked, prodded, and MOST OF ALL, not taken seriously when you try to explain to the endless number of doctors you’ve seen, just how debilitating I am and how sick you really feel.

In all probability you will get a referral from these ‘understanding’ (clueless) doctors, to see a psychiatrist.

Your family, friends and co-workers will all listen to you until they just get tired of hearing about how I make you feel, and just how debilitating I am.

Some of them will say things like “Oh, you are just having a bad day” or “Well, remember, you can’t do the things you use to do 20 YEARS ago”, not hearing that you said 20 DAYS ago.

They’ll also say things like, “if you just get up and move, get outside and do things, you’ll feel better.” They won’t understand that I take away the ‘gas’ that powers your body and mind to ENABLE you to do those things.

Some will start talking behind your back, they’ll call you a hypochondriac, while you slowly feel that you are losing your dignity trying to make them understand, especially if you are in the middle of a conversation with a “normal” person, and can’t remember what you were going to say next.

You’ll be told things like, “Oh, my grandmother had that, and she’s fine on her medication” when you desperately want to explain that I don’t impose myself upon everyone in the exact same way, and just because that grandmother is fine on the medication SHE’S taking, doesn’t mean it will work for you.

The only place you will get the kind of support and understanding in dealing with me is with other people that have me.

They are really the only ones who can truly understand.

It is so very important to take care of yourself whether or not you have any health challenges.

Please Please Please do it BEFORE you are faced with ? ? ?

Hashi’s~AIP Day 3~ Again¿

Apparently I did not realize how great I felt on the AIP diet. . . Go Figure

It has only been a few days since I returned and my hands are now working with manageable pain and my wrists are now moving!

They no longer feel like I am being torn apart . . .

WOW that was quick!      Hooray!

So . . .

Have I been completely compliant?


and not intentional, I accidentally grabbed regular bacon with nitrates and sugar. No I did not catch it until I had cooked most of it. Did I throw it away heck no.

Eating for autoimmune can be quite taxing for your pocket book since you attempt to purchase organic everything.

I am in heaven this morning I found a “jam” recipe along with chicken meatballs. This has my tastebuds wildly singing and I have not even made the meatballs yet! As I was perusing one of my favorite websites Empowered Sustenance I ran across this recipe from Michelle Hoover UnBound Wellness

I urge you whether or not you have a health issue to wander through my favorite AIP websites. They are dedicated to health, wellness and have fantabulous recipes!

Hashimoto’s? What do I do now?

It seems no matter what I do my body is intent on having inflammation and increase weight!

In 2014 I was diagnosed with Hashimoto’s; which is an autoimmune disorder involving your Thyroid.

Actually according to my blood work the correct diagnosis should have been in 2013 with the first Naturopath I saw regarding how terrible I was feeling.

(You see now that I can read my blood work I know Hashimoto’s had it’s claws into me then).

This prompts SO MANY OTHER QUESTIONS it is mind boggling and I will attempt to address them all during the course of my posts. Meaning I will write them down as I think of them since my brain function is challenged.

Back to December 2014, the naturopath that diagnosed me put me immediately on the “whole 30” eating plan.

My TSH, T3 FREE & T4 FREE are not too far of normal however my Antibodies were at 320 which is high and validates my symptoms.

Off I go on the whole 30, into treacherous territory. By the time March rolled around I was NOT feeling ANY better in fact now my joints were very painful. . .

My blood work showed my antibodies rose to a whopping 500 and the Naturopath suggested I keep doing what I was doing and hope for the best. . .

Well I said hell with that crap I will find another Doc who might be able to help. Come to find out eggs are not a good thing for me to eat.

Not only did i find another Doc I also started reading and taking things into my own hands. Starting with the AIP diet, using The Autoimmune Paleo Cookbook by Mickey Trescott, NTP. This book has some great resource information for finding the foods you need in your area! I love that she is from my area the Great Northwest!

AND I have to say there are many more great websites/blogs out there to do your research and get great info from. I will post my favorites at the end of this post.

I followed that faithfully for about 5 months and still had an enormous amount of inflammation and just felt like crap. My antibodies soared to new heights and no one seems to be able to help calm this down.

I have seen several Naturopaths and EVERYONE has a different opinion as to what I should or should not be eating, taking what supplements or thyroid meds. At one point  there was very little I was eating.

The madness continued . . .

They had me avoiding anything with sulfur like dark green veggies, onions, garlic etc. When you add that to the already forbidden foods, gluten, nightshades, dairy, eggs, nuts, seeds, etc it became impossible to eat out much less in.

My cupboard was filled with supplements, my pocketbook was thousands of dollars lighter and the scale is ticking heavier and heavier.

Actually comical comes to mind along with hysterical insanity. . .

A couple months ago I decided to use some other guidelines and eat a vegetarian/vegan lifestyle. (As much as I like the idea of it I think it is what sent my body into agonizing pain with every movement.)

You can eat lots of veggies and fruits you have gluten free grains and legumes. According to everything I have gotten my hands on to read, ALL nuts and seeds (including spices that were once seeds), nightshades, legumes and gluten free grains are completely OFF the list of foods a Hashimotoin should be putting in  their body!

SO . . .


It is now October 2017 almost 3 years since diagnosed and I am so very worse for the wear. At this point it is difficult to know exactly what to do.

I have found a Doc who seems to know what the heck she is doing. She has me on a very very very small dose of a thyroid medication and will be starting another med in the next few days to see if we can get this body to release the pain. She has been onboard with all my trials of the past year and supported everything I needed to do even though I am much worse.

We are all very different not only because we are completely unique, we all have gone through things that add to that uniqueness. We all will have some extenuating circumstances which probably affect everything. I am 62, have arthritis, due to an accident there is damage to my neck and brain, and my knees are shit, and a few more things I can add to the list.

This weekend I prepared to start on the AIP again this morning.
Time will tell and I am just tenacious enough to keep on keeping on . . .
I am excited to revel in my successes and learn from the failures.
